The development and story of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2019

The official description states that we will have to prepare to go dark as the stakes have never been higher. As we take on the role of Tier One Operators in a heat- racing saga that will affect the global balance of power, we will see an epic reimagining of the iconic Modern Warfare series from the ground up. This is the short description given to us by the developers that started it all, Infinity Ward about the upcoming new iteration of Call of Duty. 

In short the game is a first person shooter developed by the people at Infinity Ward for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Windows. 

This will be the 16th game of the series and the fourth of the Modern Warfare branch also an interesting fact is that this is the second game with a three year development period that the developers have made. The game was officially announced on May 30th 2019 and will be released on October 25th 2019. This means that quite soon we will be able to get our hands on this bad boy.

Early during its development Infinity Ward decided to make something that is relevant to today and took ideas from current day real world terrorism that we hear in the news frequently. They wanted to make something dark, gritty and most importantly real. The narrative directors mentioned that the game will have more of a mature and authentic feel unlike other instalments of the series. 

This time we will not be in the boots of a superhero but a normal person that is forced to experience the harshness of war. They tried to create some emotional connection through the realities of war and want to push what is normally expected out of the way. They want us to feel what we normally only hear about in news.

The reason they want to reimagine the story from the original is that they know how much us Call of Duty fans love the way everything was told and experienced in the first game. This time though the war will not be ripped from news headlines from 2007 but from 2019 instead. This means that it won’t be as simple as the good guys wear this uniform and the bad guys wear the other one. The enemy this time is not so easily recognisable and beatable. Not that that kind of war is “simple” but the developers this time want to take us to our own back yard. That is the scary thing, as what they want to show us is the possibility of our safe space being destroyed by terrorism. 

From their point of view in the game anything can become a battlefield in the snap of a finger, something that sadly might take civilian casualties. But as unfortunate as that is, civilian death during war time is something that actually happens every day. It can be said that the people at Infinity Ward want to make a little bit of a statement about the harshness of war and don’t want to idolize it like it normally happens. They will try to bring to the light what it means to be close to death and how it can change you.

What do the words modern warfare mean in 2019?

When they started thinking of what to do with Call of Duty Modern Warfare this time, as stated by the developers themselves they asked a question to each other. That question was “What do the words modern warfare mean in 2019”? This is the question that started it all, that is why they made is so we experience the feeling of helplessness in front of an unexpected enemy that could strike at any place and any moment. 

One second you could just be walking down the main street of a city and in the next you will find yourself in the middle of a destroyed road picking up arms and fighting for your independence. For the developers this is the thing they strive to achieve.

Now a little bit more information regarding the Campaign itself. The new Call of Duty Modern Warfare takes notes and characters from the original series and shows them in a modern light that we can understand. The iconic Captain Price will return for sure but we have yet to see if there are other characters and locations we will be familiar with. 

The Campaign sets out to give us an emotionally and intensely charged experience that shows us the realities of modern war. We will be fighting alongside a diverse and interesting cast and this time we will work within a grey area of the rules of engagement. There will be intense covert operation across various European cities and even the volatile Middle East. 

What we know for sure at this time is that we will see London during a terrorist attack and even the fictional country of Urzikstan through the eyes of different characters. The new game in the series is bound to take us by surprise and make us feel something that previous iterations did not exactly deliver. All that we can say is that we can’t wait for the release of the game in order to try out this incredibly hyped and interesting story.
