What is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare?

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is the newest entrance into the long running video game franchise known as Call of Duty, where you take up the call to arms as different characters from various periods of time. Your goal ultimately is to complete the campaign inserted into the game, but that is not all of course, you could bask in the glory of the various multiplayer game modes represented in the game or repel the zombie apocalypse as long as you possibly can. 

Infinity Ward is who we have to thank for this entry, as they have previously developed 6 out of the 15 in the aforementioned franchise, namely: 

• Call of Duty 2

• Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

• Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

• Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

• Call of Duty: Ghosts

• Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare. 

The ‘’Modern Warfare’’ act has come to end with the third instalment, but Infinity Ward have decided to relaunch the first one with massive updates to the game engine. 

Other developers have worked on the franchise as well, namely Treyarch and Sledgehammer Games.  Treyarch have developed: 

• Call of Duty 3

• Call of Duty: World at War

• Call of Duty: Black Ops

• Call of Duty: Black Ops 2

• Call of Duty: Black Ops 3

• Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. 

Sledgehammer Games on the other hand have made Call of Duty: 

• Modern Warfare 3 (In collaboration with Infinity Ward)

• Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare and Call of Duty: WWII 

However, since the games come out yearly, one may think that the different arcs start and finish and then go on to the next arc, but that is not true. The developers give the driver’s seat to the next developer when they finish a game, by that we mean that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 1 which started in 2007 the fourth game did not come in 2009, rather it came in 2011, with World at War and the first instalment of Black Ops squished in between. There is never an instance where the same developer works on 2 games in 2 subsequent years, except in the first 2, they were both developed by Infinity Ward. 

Another thing stays true in terms of the publisher though - the publisher has always been Activision. 

Developed by Infinity Ward, they previously did Infinite Warfare which continues their three-year development cycle tradition for the franchise. 

Using a brand new engine is something also unique here, allowing for environments with higher detail than ever before, advanced photogrammetry and the ability to render more. Way more detailed volumetric lighting and the use of ray tracing, with more and more games trying to incorporate it into their games in these last 2 years. 

The games narrative is described to be ‘’much more grown-up and mature, which should deliver a more intimate and emotional response from the player base through a depiction of conflict based on contemporary events. Take for instance terror attack in London and the Syrian Civil War, rather than what the original trilogy covered which was over-reliance on bombastic set pieces. 

Games are going more and more into sensitive material which is being covered by series and films almost all the time, take for instance American Sniper or Sicario which have told’’ realistic, relatable, relevant, and provocative stories all in a way to touch people on a more emotional level. Do not take it as something bad though, it will be harder to do it in a video game, but we will be here to witness it first-hand if it actually does manage to do it and pave the way for more to follow in its footsteps. The road forward will be full with obstacles and divided opinions, but hopefully they will come out of the other side successful or at the very least, proud of what they achieved during this whole time. 

 

It will serve as the sixteenth entry overall in the Call of Duty series and as it is called a ‘’soft reboot’’ of the Modern Warfare sub-series or also known as arc. Scheduled to release on all major platforms on the 25th of October, those include Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The game is set to take place in a realistic and modern setting, which is not a first for the series but it is great that they still strive to bring even more realistic settings for us to enjoy. 

Furthermore, for the first time in the history of this franchise there will be support for cross-platform multiplayer, which means that you can play with or against your friends without a bottleneck from the system, be it computer or console. Continuing onto the single player campaign which we have already stated will focus on realism, but will also feature tactically-based where you are given a different score at the end of the level based on the choices you have taken. 

An example of that system would be the quickness of assuming if an NPC is out to do something bad or rather something neutral. For instance, whether a civilian who is believed to be reaching for a gun, but rather simply grabs her baby from a crib. This is known as collateral damage score, also known as threat assessment, which is based on how many civilians the player injures or kills, furthermore a score is given, from a high A to a low F. 

Rewards are also given to those who score higher. Character dialogue will also offer different options based on what choices the player makes in the game. In terms of the game’s multiplayer a revision has also taken place, which allows for more tactical gameplay, which includes a focus on map exploration, door breaching and also arguably the most interesting one is the ‘’Realism‘’ mode which will give the ability to remove the HUD. 

In addition to the HUD being removed, the mini-map has been removed in favour of a compass-style marker, with certain visual cues to differentiate friendlies and enemies. The online mode allows for a larger range of players within a map than previous instalments, with that comes a new mode called ‘’Ground War’’ which brings over 100 players at the same time. 

‘’Gunfight’’ is another new mode, which pins 2 teams of 2 players against each other in small matches lasting just forty seconds per round. The game also includes an extensive weapons customization system, presenting most guns with up to 60 different attachments to choose from, with the maximum being 5 at the same time. One of the more shocking changes in this entry will be that for the first time since 2013’s Call of Duty: Ghosts not to feature a Zombies Mode, but rather feature the cooperative ‘’Specs Ops’’ mode previously only accessible in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. 

Also there is something else we will see making a return and that will be Call of Duty points. CP will be accessible at launch and in the Modern Warfare game, most likely it will not be connected to loot boxes.  There will definitely be controversy with Modern Warfare once CP appears but if they will be as bad as everyone thinks, while there are also speculations that prestige tokens will be making a return but that is yet to be seen. 

The classic Captain Price character will be making his untimely return, but this time portrayed by Barry Sloane rather than Billy Murray, who previously voiced him. You will be taking control of a Metropolitan Police Sergeant Kyle Garrick, a former British Army officer. He will be present for the first half of the campaign and then you shift to Alex, a CIA officer, in second part of the campaign.

The game was shown first at E3 2019, where it was subject to some controversy in response to featuring a more realistic and mature subject matter, for instance showing child soldiers and the ability to shoot civilians (which included infants). Many reviewers have given their truthful opinion on the game and what it strives to show its audience. 

Almost all agree that it is the most divisive game of the event, showing sensitive subject matter and over-dramatized violence into a boss fight, which can sometimes be considered as trademarks of Activision Publishing. We can all agree at least that this game will be quite different compared to what we recently got used to from Call of Duty. Hopefully all this hype will pay off and we will get an incredible story which will go down in gaming history, just like the original Modern Warfare.
